Course Objective-Process Safety Management (PSM) is a collection of management systems and their implementation with the purpose of controlling the risk of major accidents; PSM focuses on preventing the incidents that originate from process hazards (such as spillage / release of flammable & toxic liquid & gases etc. resulting fire/ explosion & catastrophes). Process Safety Management ( PSM) is the application of management systems and controls (programs, procedures, audits, evaluations) to a manufacturing or chemical process in a way that process hazards are identified, understood, and controlled, so that process-related injuries and incidents are prevented.

  • The RBPS approach recognizes that all hazards and risks in an operation or facility are not equal; consequently, apportioning resources in a manner that focuses effort on greater hazards and higher risks . Using the same high-intensity practices to manage every hazard is an inefficient use of limited resources. A risk-based approach reduces the potential for assigning an undue amount of resources to managing lower-risk activities, thereby freeing up resources for tasks that address higher-risk activities. If an organization does not directly control risk, the organization cannot directly control quality, safety, environmental impact, or production to acceptable levels. An organization must sustainably control human error to manage the risk of accidental losses that impact quality, safety, the environment, production, or assets. The human factor deficiencies included lack of control of employee fatigue, poor human-system-interface design, poor communication by radio/phone, out-of-date and inaccurate operating procedures, and poor communication between employees at shift handover.
